In 1986 kon The Dream Syndicate wijzen op twee bijzonder goed ontvangen albums vol spannende gitaarrock, The Days of Wine and Roses en Medicine Show. De band had er inmiddels enkele bezettingswijzigingen opzitten en bestond toen uit Steve Wynn (zang/gitaar), Dennis Duck (drums) en nieuwe leden Mark Walton (bas/zang) en Paul B. Cutler (gitaar/zang). Laatstgenoemde had in 1982 al de eerste ep van The Dream Syndicate geproduceerd. Het eerste album in deze nieuwe bezetting was Out of the Grey. De plaat kwam uit op Big Time Records, nadat A&M The Dream Syndicate had gedumpt. Hoewel dit derde album op zichzelf een prima plaat was, bleef het (begrijpelijk) in de schaduw...
